Students are guided in developmentally appropriate play that mimics what they see at home and in the world around them. Over our 2-year program, children develop toward greater complexity, organization, and internalization. For example, we have a play kitchen and toy cars, dolls, robots, and other gadgets from the adult world that children see. Pretending to be "grown up" is now considered a typical part of early childhood development.
Children are encouraged to play and pretend in groups. Here, under the guidance of a teacher, kids express their understanding of what it means to be an older adult. Age difference is a form of cultural difference and respect for various cultures is promoted.
